PAOC pre-conference workshops

PAOC pre-conference workshops in association with the AP Leventis Ornithological Research Institute

We will be running some pre-conference training workshops aimed to help students and early career researchers. These will run the day before the PAOC starts on Sunday 16th October. If you want to attend any of them the important thing to remember is just to be there for the Sunday. We will run the workshops once or twice during the day depending on demand and you can sign up to the workshops on the day as you want. We will send out further details closer to the time. But do remember to arrive on Saturday 15th Oct if you want to take advantage of the workshops the next day.

We also hope to run some surgeries for help with research, analysis and career questions for early career researchers during the conference. Basically we will recruit some more experienced ornithologists to be available in a room every day at the conference and to simply have a surgery where anyone can turn up with their analysis problems or experimental design questions and have a 1:1 session with someone. We aim to help students or early career researchers to avoid some basic mistakes and to be steered in the right direction with respect to ornithological study design and data analysis. Again we will advertise the details of these surgeries at the conference: they will occur informally during the conference subject to demand and no prior booking or action is needed.

The current program of workshops for Sunday 16th October is as below, but we hope for more to be added. Workshops will be in French and English except for the R workshop but we hope to provide some French language support there as well.

Bird mapping in Africa - Ulf Ottosson

Morning session – no limit to number of attendees

This workshop will be on Bird Mapping in Africa. Representatives from the various Atlas Projects in Africa meet, share experiences and discuss common problems. This workshop will be in English and French.

Introduction to statistical analysis in R for complete beginners Parts 1 and 2 - Will Cresswell

Morning session Part 1, Afternoon session Part 2 – limit 16 people per session

These workshops will be for anyone who has heard of R but is frightened of it. Bring your own laptop loaded with the free program R https://www.r-project.org/ and find out how to start using this essential program for any biologist. Part 1 will cover starting R, data importing, plotting data and fitting lines. Part 2 will cover basic General Linear Models and will build on Part 1. You could do both parts, or just Part 2 if you have a little experience already. Priority will be given to those who wish to do both parts. This will be taught in English only but we will aim to have French speaking demonstrators there to help.

Presentation skills - Juliet Vickery & Samuel Temidayo (English); Geoffroy Citegetse & Abdoulaye Ndiaye (French)

Afternoon session (morning as well if sufficient demand) – limit 16 people per session

A practical session where you can practice your PAOC presentation or any short talk with critical feedback and a guide to being a more effective and engaging communicator. We will split into two separate groups for French & English presentations before reuniting for a general discussion about presentation skills; or run a French session in the afternoon and English in the morning depending on demand.

Scientific publishing - Phil Atkinson, Pierre Defos du Rau & Imad Cherkaoui

Afternoon session – no limit to number of attendees

A practical guide to how to prepare papers for publication, the scientific peer review process and how scientific journals work to give you the best chance of submitting your paper successfully to the right journal. The format will be a question and answer session where you can ask all the questions that you have ever wanted to ask about the publication process. The workshop will be carried out in both French and English.

Building networks (across flyways): how to get to know the right people - Rien van Wijk & Chris Rostron

Afternoon session – no limit to number of attendees

This workshop will be about networking, finding the right people for your questions and how to approach them. The workshop will be in association with the Migratory Landbird Study Group & the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust. The workshop will be carried out in both French and English.
