MID-CONGRESS EXCURSION

The Local Organising Committee is organising mid-congress excursions on 19th October. The cost of these trips is included within the congress registration fee. The logistics and site selection are not yet established, but we anticipate to offer the following trips:

 > Parc National des Iles de la Madelaine

This small park comprises three rocky, volcanic islands a few kilometres west of Dakar. The largest, Ile aux serpents, is about 15 hectares in size. There is a small bay, ideal for snorkelling. The island has a rather flat plateau with shrubs and grassland. The island is famous for supporting Africa’s only breeding Red-billed Tropicbird outside the island nations. This beautiful bird is our congress emblem.

 > Technopole

The coastline of Dakar supports a number of wetlands behind the sand dunes, known as the niayes. The closest to Dakar is at Technopole, where a large variety of waterbirds can be seen, including grebes, herons, waders and gulls.

 > Popenguine-Somone

South of Dakar is the protected area complex of Popenguine and Somone, which comprises beach, high cliffs and a coastal lagoon fringed by mangroves. A women’s cooperative has spearheaded a mangrove restoration programme here. There is an observation tower and walking trails and the possibility to take a boat ride through the mangroves.

 > Mbour - Joal

South of Dakar on the Petite Côte, there is aresearch station at Mbour, set in 60 hectares of woodlands. The birdlife has been studied here of many years, and comprises a wide range of woodland birds. Nearby is Joal, where coastal birds can be numerous.

 > Cap VertSeawatching

Dakar’s Cap Vert peninsula offers some of the best seawatching in Africa. Seawatching can be done successfully from the Ile de Ngor, a short distance from the conference venue, as well as from the terrace of an adjacent hotel. In October, it should be possible to see a variety of gulls, terns, skuas, shearwaters and petrels. We hope to also provide an option for visitors to take a pelagic seawatching trip, though this would incur an additional cost.

Please check later for more information on the mid-congress excursions.
